ACE Shock Catalog

Based on the 64-second merged IMF and Solar Wind data of ACE satellite, an auto-search computer program was applied to find the potential interplanetary shocks (IP shocks) and shock-like solar wind structures. Each event was further inspected visually. Rankine- Hugoniot relationship was also tested to rule out the sharp interplanetary discontinuities. The shock parameters are all calculated by using the shock fitting procedure proposed by Lin et al. [2006].

Solar Wind Categorization

Based on the reference solar wind used by Xu and Borovsky [2015], an approach from machine learning perspectives is developed to automatically classify the solar wind at 1 AU into four types: coronal-hole-origin, streamer belt-origin, sector-reversal-region-origin, and ejecta. An eight dimensional scheme by KNN classifier obtains the highest overall classification accuracy, 92.8%. No solar wind composition measurements are needed, permitting our classification scheme to be applied to most solar wind spacecraft data. Besides, two application examples indicate that solar wind classification is helpful for the risk evaluation of predicted magnetic storms and surface charging of geosynchronous spacecrafts.
